The trial right: changing your mind once
If you join a Medicare Advantage plan when you first become eligible at sixty-five, federal law gives you a trial period. Should you leave that plan within the first twelve months, you can return to original Medicare and buy a Medigap policy without answering health questions. It is a genuine escape hatch for people who discover the network does not work for them.
Two details decide whether it applies. The trial right is tied to your first enrollment in an Advantage plan at sixty-five, not to every switch you make later. And it has to be exercised within the deadline after the Advantage coverage ends, usually sixty-three days. Miss it and the protection is gone, not deferred.
