Background
The former Plateau Group Medigap business, rebranded
Launched
August 2026
Market
Medigap through independent agents

Lumos is the new name for the Plateau Group's Medicare Supplement business, launched in August 2026. The organization behind it is not new, it brings decades of senior-market underwriting, but the brand is, which creates a specific problem for a shopper: almost nothing written about Lumos online reflects an actual claims or rate record, because the name is only months old. We treat it as a serious option on price and underwriting and as an unproven one on rate stability.

Why consider Lumos

  • An established underwriting organization selling under a new consumer brand, so the operational experience is older than the logo.
  • Independent-agent distribution, which usually keeps pricing sharper than a captive channel.
  • Worth pricing in the states where it is filed, especially if the national brands come back high for your age and ZIP.

What to check first

  • There is no Lumos-specific increase history yet. Ask about the predecessor Plateau blocks and how they have been priced.
  • Reviews and ratings you find under the Lumos name may describe the launch rather than the product. Ask us for the filings instead.
  • Confirm the issuing company on the policy and its state availability before you compare premiums.

How we compare this carrier against the rest

Medigap benefits are standardized by federal law, so a Plan G from Lumos covers exactly what a Plan G from any other carrier covers. That leaves five things worth comparing, and we check all five before making a recommendation:

  • The filed premium at your age, ZIP code, and tobacco status
  • The last five years of rate increases on the exact plan and block
  • Whether pricing is attained-age, issue-age, or community-rated
  • Household, spousal, and multi-policy discounts you qualify for
  • The issuing legal entity, since one brand can hold several blocks

Common questions

Before you apply

Is this carrier cheaper than the others?
Sometimes, and only for a specific age, ZIP code, tobacco status, and household. Medigap benefits are identical by plan letter, so price is the only real variable — which is why we quote the whole market rather than publishing a number that goes stale.
Can I be turned down for health reasons?
Outside your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, and outside any state-specific rights such as a birthday rule, yes. Carriers use medical underwriting and can decline or rate you up.
What happens to my rate over time?
The carrier files increases with your state insurance department, and they apply to your whole block of business. A carrier with a history of double-digit annual increases is expensive even when the first year looks cheap.
