HealthSpring is the Medicare operation Cigna built and later sold. HCSC, the nonprofit parent of several Blue Cross plans, bought it in 2025, and it is now the brand under which the former Cigna Medigap book is marketed. What surprises most people is that HealthSpring itself is not the insurer: the policy is issued by one of five life companies, including American Retirement Life Insurance Company and Loyal American Life. That detail is not paperwork trivia, because each entity files its own rates in each state, so two quotes that both say HealthSpring can differ by hundreds of dollars a year.

Same corporate family

Each company in this group writes its own policies and files its own rates, so each one has a separate page:

Why consider HealthSpring

  • A genuine multi-state Medigap program with Plans G and N, distributed through independent agents rather than a single captive channel, which generally keeps pricing competitive.
  • Owned by HCSC, one of the largest nonprofit health insurers in the country and the operator of Blue Cross plans in several states.
  • The natural place to price a quote if you started out looking for Cigna coverage.

What to check first

  • American Retirement Life and Medco Containment policies are not available in Kansas or Kentucky, so the issuing company changes with your address.
  • Sharing a parent with Blue Cross plans does not give you a Blue provider network, since Medigap has no network at all.
  • Confirm the exact issuing entity in writing, and compare its rate history rather than the group average.

How we compare this carrier against the rest

Medigap benefits are standardized by federal law, so a Plan G from HealthSpring covers exactly what a Plan G from any other carrier covers. That leaves five things worth comparing, and we check all five before making a recommendation:

  • The filed premium at your age, ZIP code, and tobacco status
  • The last five years of rate increases on the exact plan and block
  • Whether pricing is attained-age, issue-age, or community-rated
  • Household, spousal, and multi-policy discounts you qualify for
  • The issuing legal entity, since one brand can hold several blocks

Common questions

Before you apply

Is this carrier cheaper than the others?
Sometimes, and only for a specific age, ZIP code, tobacco status, and household. Medigap benefits are identical by plan letter, so price is the only real variable — which is why we quote the whole market rather than publishing a number that goes stale.
Can I be turned down for health reasons?
Outside your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, and outside any state-specific rights such as a birthday rule, yes. Carriers use medical underwriting and can decline or rate you up.
What happens to my rate over time?
The carrier files increases with your state insurance department, and they apply to your whole block of business. A carrier with a history of double-digit annual increases is expensive even when the first year looks cheap.
